The latest tourism figures out from the statisticians show a over 16 % drop in tourist numbers compared with the same period last year. Most affected are the visitors from the U.K due to the poor Euro Exchange rate combined with the recession. Russians are the second largest visitors to Cyprus with Sweedish nationals coming  third. However the UK market still  makes up the largest segment.

The issue of property and the owners rights on both sides of the divided island is a problematic one. The U N secretary general said there were ways through the “Property issue ” in Cyprus. The general just met with Premier Christofias and the issue of Property in Cyprus was discussed as part of the Bizonal and Bi communal solution model currently on the discussion table.

The new Larnaca airport aproaches its “live” date which is now set for nov 7th. Managed by Hermes Airports Ltd who are pre planning with a run of test scenarios with over 3500 people ahead of the official opening. This is necessary as part of the test phase.

Unions associated with Cyprus Airways have postponed a planned strike . Its been reported that Unions are objecting to a planned injection of cash into EuroCypria (Another air carrier) and say a study should be implemented prior. Consequences could be job losses in both carriers . The Unions have called for a direct intervention by the Prime minister.

In a prison in the North of Cyprus Prisoners have gone on a hunger strike. the prisoners are striking as they are claiming their human rights have been abused They are also hunger striking because of the authorities. this according to the Northern Radio station broadcasts.

The latest figures of the amount of people out of work in Cyprus shows another increase in unemployment. The rise in unempoyed people has started to decrease as a percentage when compared to previous rate rises but the figure of out of work people is now approaching 20.000.

A planned demonstration is to take place at Morphou on the 11 th October. Participants include Christofias the President of Cyprus. The purpose being to bring more awareness to the Turkish occupation of the  Morphou municipality.The major of Morphou Charalambos Pittas has also spoken out at a recent press conference

October 1st marks Cyprus Independence day. Gaining Independence from Great Britain. Cyprus was a former colony of Great Britain since 1878 , ending colonisation in 1960. Speaches by Premier Christofias refered to the ongoing ”Cyprus problem” and he sent a message of friendship to Turkish Cypriots.
