Plans are afoot to meet EU goals for energy conservation and part of this is the planned construction of a wind farm which will be the largest in Eastern Europe. The European investment bank will donate 65 Million Euros. A Danish company has been contracted to construct the farm of 41 turbines in the Paphos area.

At Larnaca airport two more airlines are soon to be ariving and flying in and out of Larnaca Airport : Namely; Fly Baboo from Switzerland and Astra from Greece. Fly Baboo will fly once a week and Astra twice a week.

Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus helped see of Ireland in the Davis Cup Tennis competition ( Group Two / second round ) and hence assisted to move Cyprus to move towards the next stage, with a play off against either Monaco or Finland.

The Government in Cyprus is considering banning smoking in all public places such as hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. This has come about due to anti smoking bodies protesting last Wednesday. The bill was discussed at the house health comittee.

A small bomb went off over night in the capital Nicosia in the Acropolis Area. CyprusPolice reported it was a small device which damaged a car outside an apartment block. No one was injured.

In the Limassol district out near Zanatzia southern region a massive blaze has been brought under control although high winds have hampered efforts. British forces Helicoptors and Cyprus Firefighters and a firefighting plane were all called into action.

Cyprus tourism is down. Revenues fell over 12 % in the first quarter. The Cyprus Hotels Association has announced incentives designed to soften the impact. Most tourists come from Scandinavia and the UK and the economic issues have dictated a slowdown in numbers of Tourist arriving in Cyprus. When comparing income generated form Tourists, in the month of March 124.8 million Euros was generated this year compared to 143.2 Euros last march.

Elections in North Cyprus have been won by North Turkish Cypriot Nationalists. This could slow up the re unification process. The Turkish Cypriot Leader Mr Talat saw the right wing National Unity Party take more than 44 % of the votes. More can be read at the turkish weekly newspaper on line
