The ministry of Communications and works signed a convention to study the amount of road accidents amongst young people. The government of Cyprus has instigated a plan which is hoped to reduce the number of casualties on the roads.

Cyprus is set to take over the European Presidency 2012 in the second half of 2012 and the European Secretary for Cyprus Mr Andreas Moleskis comented that despite the smaller size of the island of Cyprus as a member that it would be a resounding success. This would be the first time that Cyprus will hold the position and there was a good turn out of the Cypriot representative bodies in suppport at a recently held seminar

The CYBC has made ready its digital TV base. In 2012 the current analogue system which is now running along side the new digital system will be switched off. There are now new transmitters on the island and on channel 33 for example Euro news is available. It is planned that every property in Cyprus be covered by the years end ( 2010 )

Sales in the North of Cyprus have seen an upsurge by Israeli buyers and a definitive downturn in buyers from the U.K Jews from Israel are wanting holiday homes and input from Israeli business firms have increased along side most of the development which is also done by Israeli companies. Turkish buyers still remain the number one buyers of land in the north but Israel is now a definite second acording to the North Cyprus Real Esate Association headed by Hasan Sungur.

This morning Air Raid Sirens went off to signal the Turkish invasion in 1974. 34 years ago. Remembrances will occur over the island today including one by the Archbishop with Premier Chistofias present. 160000 Greek Cypriots were made homeless.

Its now official in that the Government of Cyprus is to officially approve the latest Law governing smoking in public places and hence the banning of smoking in Pubs, Clubs and public places. The fine for breaking the Law will be up to 2000 Euros. There is some breathing space for the smokers as the new law is not due at this time to come into effect until January 2010.

There have been 5 more cases of swine flu reported in the Paralimni / Ayia Napa areas. All are Cypriots but the ministry of health reports that all infected Cypriots have had contact with foreigners. The total number of H1N1 cases in Cyprus has now risen to 25 confirmed.

A checkpoint in Limnitis is planned to be opened by the European President Jose Manuel Barroso around he begining of July. The EU president is planning to meet leaders from both the South and North of Cyprus to have talks and dinner (Hosted by Premier Christofias).

Last week there were reports of a UFO over Tymbou airport Northern Cyprus. There have been a number of UFO sightings this year this being the latest. Reported by an Airline pilot flying from Istanbul sighting the UFO over the northern Cyprus Coastline, furthermore the UFO followed the Airline for some time.

The latest news on swine flu in Cyprus is that Cyprus does not have any current cases , this despite the world health organisation raising the Swine Flu status to global pandemic . Health minister Christos Patsalides reported that each country would be taking actions based on the individual countries developments in the outbreak.
