The disruptive, recent petrol strike over the southern part of Cyprus has concluded. the strike ran for three days. Not much has been released in the terms of why the strike has ended after a meeting between the petrol companies and the ministers. The strike started due to government restrictions on pricing structures.
The Cyprus Government is to creat a central Data Warehouse. The Council of Ministers met and "rubber stamped" the creation mid week. The central datacentre will allow the further computerisation of the various ministries data and to hence allow the sharing more easily of such data between them. The project is expected to take around 30 months to complete.

Overnight on friday an Isreali shipping vessel the "Sallas" issued a Mayday call and a search was launched by United Nations Cypriot and Israeli search teams. One crew member has since been found. The ship has sunk off the Cyprus coast whilst on its way to Haifa. The reasons why are not yet known.

The new airport at Larnaca is now officially open for business. Flight CY322 from Amman marked the first arrival with 56 passengers. Cyprus Airways and Easy Jet are the first carriers with the remainder to follow in due course.

The Cypriot Four year bond was set at a 1Billion Euro limit but the subscriptions proved popular to the amount of over 5.5 Billion Euros. Sir David Miliband the British Foreign Secretary spoke last week about support for a resolution to the Cyprus Problem. Meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou he said talks between the two leaders of Divided Cyprus , namely Pesident Christofias and Premier Mehmet Ali Talat should let talks be guided from Cyprus and not from abroad. London will be sending messages of support for a solution. The two leaders on Cyprus have met 28 times since September last year discussing the Divided Problem.

A recent survey carried out suggests that unemployment has risen due to workers from outside of Cyprus coming in. The survey shows most Cypriots agree that foreign workers have caused unemployment to rise. A major fire broke out in the village of Flasou which lies in the Troodos mountain range. The fire which broke out early morning Tuesday was tackeled by the Forestry authorities in combination with the Fire Department who were assisted by Helicopters and a plane. This is the first major fire of the year and the authorities are investigating the cause.

May Day in Cyprus has seen demonstrations and Rallies organised in part by the PEO ( Pancyprion Federation of labour ). Mainland Greece saw riots in Athens and in Turkey after re instating the bank holday as an offical day, there were demonstrations in Istambul.

Easter is a very important time in the Cypriot Calander. Festivities include many fireworks and fires islandwide on top of the religious events. The dangers of fireworks are well documented but despite this here in Limassol, three people were injured in seperate incidents on hands and faces. Larnaca saw a boy with burns to his neck and more serously in Nicosia, a boy may loose his hand after handling a firecracker.
There has been an incident involving Ukranians in Limassol. In the early hours a man fell into a Pub, half clothed. The landlord summoned the authorities who searched and found a second man in the area under the influence. After interviewing the second man it was found that he had stabbed his room mate. The weapon was susbsequently discovered.
At a Presidential meeting towards the Turkish parliament President Obama talked about Turkeys progression into the European Union. Reference was made to the Cyprus Problem and also to the massacre of Armenians in 1915.
